Also: I believe this is only the second comic (the other being the first) in which all six main characters appear.

PS - the typo "enought" in the Mac and Conrad valentine was just pointed out to me. I'll admit that it's not worth fixing at this point. Some things are consistent.

I am now committed to making that happen. Book club, everybody!

My guess was always that a book club was as good a way as any to meet somebody if you were school-age? I mean, crushes happen every twenty minutes in some situations, so why not the girl in book club? So, like "I'll see you at book club?" And maybe the quiet atmosphere and presumed low turnout would lead to an opportunity for smooching? So the similar but slightly more suggestive, "I'll see you at book club?"

According to NECCO every year they create a new line of candy heart sayings to replace the outdated ones (anyone remember "you r gay"?!?) Your candy is archived as the 2003 line which seems to be a focus on "school sayings". Other popular choices included "write me", "class act", "whiz kid", and "lets read". Many of them make no sense what so ever as valentines day candy. My suggestion is that they wrote them all to be reading encouragement for school children to pass out to each other. Alternatively we could simply go around saying "book club you too" as the new romantic gesture of the century!

Ha! Good one. I had to Google that, because I'd never heard that particular song. I had thought about putting something about the "Please share my umbrella" Bus Stop song by the Hollies.

That's some great food for thought. I'd never thought about that dynamic before, and I probably should.

The characters just kind of naturally fell the way they did because I felt the group of six worked pretty well. Everybody had enough people to interact with, the genders weren't underrepresented too badly, and everybody had room for different kinds of relationships (by which I mean character X can be closer to characters Y and Z than they are to character N). It was far after the fact when I realized I'd accidentally done something that mimicked the gender balance of the TV show "Friends".

I was super shy in high school, so I really didn't have many friends who were girls. The grouping of characters in the strip is probably more similar to the circle(s) of friends I developed in college (which is/are still largely intact, oddly enough), although not too consciously.

When I was a kid I loved the combination of Gonzo and Ratso... Or whatever the rat's name was. I forget. But, yeah, big Gonzo fan. Saw a Gonzo replica puppet thing on MattyCollector but it sold out. Totally would have got it back when I was single. And made movies. Oh yeah.

It just occurred to me that more girls talk to Mac than they did me during almost any part of my schooling, including college. Except elementary. Yeah... But as soon as I wanted girls hanging around, they split.

In reality, I'd suspect that either characters like Courtney and Mac have had a long-going close-enough-to-eat-together friendship or she secretly has a crush on him. Or she's just super friendly and outgoing.
